Planning care without insurance

Questions about fees, community health resources, and emergency care.

Reviewed by Nicholas Atudonyang, MD — October 2026.

Ask for the complete cost before scheduling

Ask the office about the visit fee, accepted payment methods, and whether testing or outside services would be billed separately. Published prices from another service do not establish the cost of a Walk-In Wellness visit. Confirm current terms directly.

Explore community options

HRSA-supported health centers offer care to people with or without insurance. Charges may be based on a sliding scale. Contact a center directly to ask about eligibility, required documents, appointment availability, and the services you need.

Understand DPC separately

A DPC membership is not health insurance. Ask for the current agreement and review included services, exclusions, extra charges, and cancellation terms. Do not assume a membership covers hospital care or every visit type.

Do not delay an emergency because of cost

Under EMTALA, hospital emergency departments that receive Medicare funds, which includes most U.S. hospitals, must offer an appropriate medical screening exam and, if you have an emergency condition, stabilizing treatment or an appropriate transfer, whether or not you have insurance or can pay. These protections do not make the care free. Call 911 for an emergency; ask the facility about billing or financial assistance afterward.

Emergency symptoms?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not wait for a routine appointment, phone call back or email reply.

A short record of important diagnoses, allergies, major procedures, and recent tests can help you prepare for an appointment. Include the names of other clinicians involved in your care. Ask the office which records are most useful for the visit.

If the practice provides a secure way to submit images, use good light and include both an overall view and a closer view. Do not send sensitive images by ordinary email or text. A photograph may not replace a direct examination.
