Flu, COVID, or allergies?

Understand overlapping respiratory symptoms, what to track, and when to seek care.

Reviewed by Nicholas Atudonyang, MD — October 2026.

Similar symptoms, different causes

Cough, congestion, tiredness, and sore throat can occur with several respiratory illnesses. Itchy eyes and sneezing may suggest an allergy pattern, but symptoms alone cannot reliably separate flu, COVID, allergies, or another cause. A clinical assessment or testing may be needed.

Make a useful symptom record

Write down when the illness started, whether it is improving or worsening, your temperature if measured, and any relevant test results. Note breathing symptoms and whether you are able to drink and carry out ordinary activities. Bring that timeline to an assessment.

Do not wait on emergency symptoms

Severe trouble breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, difficulty staying awake, or bluish lips or face require emergency care. Call 911 for a medical emergency. People at increased risk of serious respiratory illness should seek prompt clinical advice rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Reduce spread while you seek advice

Use good hand hygiene and take practical steps for cleaner indoor air. When ill, reduce close contact with others. Discuss appropriate prevention and testing with a healthcare professional; this guide does not diagnose the cause of your symptoms.

Emergency symptoms?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not wait for a routine appointment, phone call back or email reply.

A short record of important diagnoses, allergies, major procedures, and recent tests can help you prepare for an appointment. Include the names of other clinicians involved in your care. Ask the office which records are most useful for the visit.
